Redirect “FOMO”
FOMO, FOMO, FOMO.
Fear of missing out. You hear it so often. Are you fearing on missing out the right things though?
Most often FOMO is used when referring to not wanting to miss out on big events or a night out with your friends. People will do everything in their power to make sure they dont miss out because when they do miss out it makes then unhappy.
For a long time I struggled with the fear of missing out but I have realized I was fearing on missing out on things that weren’t necessary benefiting me.
After a lot of visualizing on what I want my life to be, I redirected FOMO. I started to look at are the things I fear missing out on putting me closer or further from my life goals? The answer most of the time is further. I started to think, is one night out of drinking more important than waking up the next day refreshed and working toward bettering myself and pushing me a step closer to my goals.
What I started to “fear” was missing out on my goals by doing all the things I used to fear I was going to miss out on. You following me?
If I have a strict routine going. I have physical fitness goals, I have work goals and more..shouldn’t I fear not hitting those goals instead?
So all the things I used to do very often are now used as tools to prevent me from not doing them or at least not as often. I am not telling you to go blow off all your friends and never go have some fun.
Prioritizing what’s important to you will redirect FOMO.
My advice would be to audit your life. Make a list of what’s truly benefiting you and what is not. Start to dial back and eventually cut out the things that are keeping you from growing and improving in life.
I don’t want to look back down the road and thing about if I had just not gone out that night or I had not spent that money…I want to look back with goal met and remember how worth it all was to get where I wanted to go and live the life I had envisioned.
